Without a doubt, the biggest complaint about laser hair removal is that it just doesn’t work for everyone. I try to cover all kinds of home hair removal here, but the articles on the laser/light products are my most popular ones, and with good reason- it’s a way to permanently get rid of hair, easily and without pain. But not for everybody. For that reason, I’ll to aim this at a demographic I hear from a lot, and I hope this is one of the NoNo reviews black women actually find useful.
The Problem With Laser Hair Removal
Whether you’re looking into super expensive professional laser treatments, or just checking out some of the more affordable options for home use, if you have dark skin, you’ll run into the same problem. While the pros may be able to treat you if your skin isn’t that dark, those with the darkest skin are simply out of luck. But why?
The answer lies in the way that light absorbs dark. When the laser hits the skin, it is absorbed by the melanin, or pigment, and converted into heat, which ultimately kills the hair. The problem is that melanin is what gives hair AND skin its color, meaning dark skin can absorb the light meant for the hair and actually cause burning.
The home laser products currently on the market, like the Tria or SensEpil, have features built in that make them simply shut down if there’s risk of burning, while the professionals will just flat out refuse to treat you.
(This is a good place to point out that if you check out the official Tria site, they have this really useful test where you can select your skin tone and hair color and find out if this type of treatment would even work for you.)
It’s No Problem With The NoNo, Though!
The No No solves the melanin problem by using heat instead of light. When you use it, you’ll feel a gentle amount of heat on your skin, but it’s mainly absorbed by your hair. It travels down the follicle and does almost the same thing the lasers do, which is to disrupt the root at a cellular level. After a few treatments, your hair will start coming in thinner and much more slowly.
When I used the NoNo, I would go almost two months between treatments! Compared to shaving, or even waxing, this is just incredibly convenient.
And having recommended this product to a number of friends and readers who couldn’t use the light-based products, I can tell you that not a single one complained that the NoNo didn’t work for them! Like I said, it works for absolutely everybody- black, white, red or green!
The Only Drawback I Can Think Of…
So, the NoNo is easy to use, safe and painless, and it will work for anybody, regardless of skin tone or hair color. But what’s the catch? Why isn’t it considered to be hands-down the best hair removal on the market? One word: permanence.
Considering how far the technology has come in the last few years, there is no doubt in my mind that we’ll soon see home laser products that work for everyone, but until then, there’s no really good, easy, and convenient method for absolutely permanent hair removal that works for everybody. For those that can’t use it yet, the No No is a great stopgap measure.
Even though it doesn’t last forever, the results you get with the NoNo last a really, really long time. If you’re used to shaving or waxing, it’s such an improvement it’s practically a miracle! When was the last time you had a shave last two months?
I’ve read a few NoNo reviews black women have written, and heard directly from friends and readers that this product is THE hair removal product for people with dark skin, or hair too light to absorb the lasers. If you’ve been looking for a working alternative to the light-based hair removers out there, this is it. To read more about how it works, you can read about my own experience with it right here.
