When they first started using lasers to permanently zap away unwanted body hair, it was way out of the reach of regular consumers. For a long time, only the rich and famous could afford this type of luxury. Even though professional treatments have become more and more affordable over the years, they’re still prohibitively expensive, typically costing thousands of dollars just to treat one area.
But with the advent of consumer products that perform basically the same function, at home, for a fraction of a price, this type of treatment has become more and more mainstream. First it was almost exclusively women using it, but now home laser hair removal for men is also incredibly common.
A Little Bit On How It Works
The products we’re seeing on the market these days are not quite as powerful (or expensive!) as the lasers clinics have used for years, but they’re still strong enough to help you achieve permanent hair removal, and they work in almost the same way as the professional lasers.
The lasers produce a certain wavelength of light that is absorbed by the melanin in the hair, transporting the energy down the shaft into the root of the hair follicle itself. At first, it causes a disruption in the hair’s growth cycle, which makes it come in more slowly, and thinner. With subsequent treatments over the course of several months, the hair is steadily weakened until it is utterly destroyed- never to return again!
Because the lasers target the hair and not the skin, there is no pain involved in the process- just a light snapping sensation, and the intensity is always adjustable on the reputable products. It’s also completely safe, as the lasers will actually shut down if the treatment might be dangerous.
Hair grows in cycles, so the typical treatment schedules that come with the products usually recommend using them every couple weeks at first, and then dropping it down as the hair stops coming in. By the end, you’ll probably only be using the laser every month or so.
But Does It Work On Thick, Manly Hair?
Even though we’re seeing more and more positive reviews for these type of products, they’re mostly written by and aimed at women, so even men who already have already seen it work on their wives are curious if it will work for them. After all, us guys have hair that is thicker, both in density and coarseness, and we have big, broad swaths of it, like our chests and back. Can a product designed for women really work for men?
The answer is a solid YES! Though they’re mainly used by women at this point, the products are typically designed with basically everybody in mind, and they work just as effectively on men as they do on women. The results will be identical: permanent hair removal!
One thing to note is that because we have thicker hair, it typically takes a little bit longer to finally achieve the fully hairless results you’re after, but not much longer. I’m talking maybe an extra month or so.
What Worked For Me
When I was looking into home laser hair removal for men, I narrowed my choices to the only two devices that were approved by the FDA: The Tria and the Silk’n SensEpil. Both work in a basically identical way with a few key differences to consider.
I ended up choosing The Tria, because the laser is cordless and rechargeable, while the SensEpil is kind of bulky and seemed harder to work with. Also, the Tria has a smaller laser, which makes each treatment take a little bit longer, but it’s also easier to reach basically any spot on my body without difficulty.
It took me just about 6 months to get rid of all the hair on my chest!
Home laser hair removal for men is a great permanent option for men who want that smooth skinned look but are sick of shaving or (shudder!) waxing. It’s safe, painless, and most importantly, it lasts forever!
