As somebody who runs a blog dedicated to home hair removal, I think I’m well qualified to say that the names they give some of these products are really not very good, and tell you basically nothing about what the product even does. Take the Tria, for example. The name could mean anything. The Silk’n SensEpil takes it a step further and makes it sound kind of nonsensical and ridiculous. The NoNo isn’t the worst name out there by a long shot, but it still makes you shake your head and wonder, “What IS a NoNo??”

Well, It’s Sort Of Like A Laser, Except With Heat

Of the three most popular hair removers out there, the other two being the aforementioned Tria and SensEpil, the NoNo is the only product that uses heat instead of light to get the job done. Interestingly, the process is very similar, since the lasers that come out of the competitors are actually converted to heat within the hair, anyway. 

When the heat of the NoNo is absorbed by the hair follicle, it travels down the shaft of the hair, where it actually causes a chemical disruption within the hair of the root itself. It shakes it up and confuses the root, basically, so that the hair has trouble coming back. The process takes a few months to get going, but most people find that after some use, they ONLY NEED TREATMENTS EVERY COUPLE MONTHS TO KEEP THE SKIN SMOOTH AND HAIRLESS!

How Do You Use It?

Like the laser products, all you need to do is slowly move the comfortably small and hand-held NoNo along your skin and it goes to work, sending heat into your hair. It’s a gentle heat, to be sure, so this is a painless process – absolutely nothing like the nightmare that is waxing.

The NoNo is smaller than the competition, so it’s easy to take with you when you travel. I’ve actually used it while traveling in the UK.

How Does This Differ From The Light-Based Treatments?

The process I described above is pretty darn close to what happens when you do home laser treatments, but there are a couple important distinctions to draw to understand what sets the NoNo apart from the other guys.

The downside to using heat, rather than light, is that the results frankly just do not last as long. While the lasers promise (and deliver) what is ultimately permanent hair removal, the NoNo only works for a matter of months. Obviously, going months without a treatment is better than shaving on the regular, but never needing a treatment again is better.

The very obvious upside, though, is that unlike the laser gizmos, the NoNo will work for absolutely anyone.

One of the big problems with laser treatments, both the home versions and the professional ones, is that before the light becomes heat, it is absorbed by the melanin, or pigment in the hair. You may remember from health class, though, that melanin is also what gives color to the skin. Can you see where I’m going with this?

If you have dark skin and seek out laser treatments, the pros won’t treat you, and the safety features built into the Tria or Silk’n SensEpil will prevent the products from evening functioning! On the other hand, the NoNo will work without problem just because of that basic difference in its operation.

My opinion would be that while the NoNo is a good product for anybody, it really excels at treating people who are simply unable to use the light-based products on the market. It’s very simple to use, and doesn’t hurt, and the results last for months. That said, I would personally rather opt for the permanent results of a product like the Tria, but it’s not an option for everybody.

Like The SensEpil, But Smaller

If you’re familiar with the Silk’n SensEpil, you know it’s a big box with a smaller box wired to it. The smaller box has a light in it, and you flash it on your skin where the light travels through your hair, turning into heat, and then gently and comfortably, over the course of a number of treatments, fries the root of the hair into nothingness.

Including Your Face

Officially, the product is only recommended for use below the cheeklines, but if you read up online you’ll find a lot of people, including myself, have used it above this point. The general consensus seems to be that Silk’n are just covering themselves in case somebody does something painfully stupid with it, like shining it directly in their eyes.

It’s also a good device to use on areas like your armpits or bikini line, which have always been not only difficult but painful to treat with traditional methods. Thankfully the Flash and Go is gentle enough that you never have to worry about anything nearly as bad as waxing, nor do you have to worry about rashes or ingrown hairs you might get from shaving.

My Experience, My Results

When I got the Flash and Go, I started using it on my face almost immediately. Treatment time is very short, I was done treating my face in under two minutes the first time I used it. In my case, I didn’t really have any hair to speak of on my chin, but I did have a little bit above my upper lip and some more up on cheeks.

Now, I don’t know about other women out there, but if you scrutinize your face anywhere nearly as much as I do, you’re probably intimately familiar with every single stray hair, am I right? Well, it’s probably for precisely this reason that I noticed results after just two treatments!

Alright, ladies, summer is just around the corner, and I’m sure a lot of you have the same concern I used to have, which is how to get rid of that hair on your bikini line in the easiest and most comfortable way possible. Shaving is ok, but doesn’t last very long, so I used to opt for the excruciating pain of waxing to be smooth longer. Well What Is It, Even?

The Flash and Go is the newer, smaller Home Pulsed Light (HPL) hair remover from Silk’n, who also make the wildly popular SensEpil. It works on the same technology, which gives you painless yet permanent removal for your body hair, but in a different package.

The SensEpil had a pretty big light on it- in fact, it’s STILL the biggest light of this kind on the market. The advantage of the big light is it’s easier to do broad swaths of skin, zapping away the hair with ease. Smaller areas, not so much.

Basically what we have here is a SensEpil reengineered to reach smaller areas, like your underarms or face (it’s technically approved for use anywhere below the cheeklines, though people online have been using them for even difficult areas like the eyebrows).

How It Worked Out For Me

Using the vaguely hair-dryer shaped light, I treated my upper lip, cheeks, and underarms. First Things First

The Silk’n SensEpil is my second favorite home laser hair removal machine. The handheld laser is significantly bigger, so it has to be powered by a base unit attached with a thick cord.

The beauty of the SensEpil is that the large laser means you spend less time per treatment. Each flash of the laser treats more hair, so you’re done in less time.

Of course, the downside to this is that if you’re trying to work a small area, like your bikini line, you’re going to have a bit more difficulty than you would with the Tria. The corded design also means you’ll have to make sure you and the SensEpil are both in good positions, so you can reach whatever part of the body you’re treating.

If you’re a man trying to find the best laser hair removal machines, this is probably a good choice for you- the bigger laser means you’ll be able to more easily treat large swaths of skin like your chest or back.

Introducing The Silk’n Flash And Go

I really feel like this product is Silk’n’s direct response to The Tria. The laser is still larger than The Tria, but smaller than the SensEpil, and it’s built into a device that looks like a price scanning gun you’d see at a supermarket.

While the design is very similar to The Tria, this unit is not cordless. It’s not as clunky as the bulky SensEpil, but not as easy to maneuver as The Tria.  For this reason, I’d mainly recommend The Flash And Go to people who want to treat large areas and smaller areas like the underarms or the face (it’s approved for use anywhere below the cheek line), but not to people who want to treat even smaller, more difficult areas like the bikini line.

Introducing The EvoDerma Lumi

This is kind of an odd one. It’s like someone took a look at the SensEpil and thought, “This isn’t big enough, or strong enough! Let’s soup it up!” To that end we now have a device that looks and operates very much like the SensEpil, except with an even bigger laser!

Again, the corded design and crazy big laser make this one difficult to use on all areas, so I would only recommend this if you’re looking to treat large areas like your arms, legs, chest, or back. If you’re going to treat any small areas at all, even the SensEpil is a better option.

As an added bonus, The EvoDerma Lumi also has the fastest in-between charge time of any of these products at only 2.5 seconds! So if you’re in a hurry, this is your gizmo!

When it comes down to it, your personal preference and areas of the body you’re planning on treating are going to be the biggest factor in which of these products you decide to go with.  These four truly are the best laser hair removal machines, and if any of them seem like they might be right for you, I highly encourage you to check out the reviews linked in the beginning of the article.

1. The Form Factor Is Right

The original No No was, to put it bluntly, a brick. It was relatively comfortable to hold, but to do a side by side comparison is to see a huge difference. The newer 8800 model is more streamlined, so it’s easier to reach any part of the body with the Thermicon tip. The new one also has a nice, useful display on it to help you along.

Both the original and the new one are cordless and rechargeable. If you’ve ever used or read reviews of products like the Tria or Silk’n SensEpil, you know that the cord can be annoyance that gets in the way and makes it difficult to reach some areas. No such problem with the NoNo.

2. It Just Works!!!

The biggest complaint about the Classic version was that it frankly just didn’t do what it was supposed to, which is remove hair! I mean, it did, but people were typically only getting hair removal in the range of 50% or so, which is really lousy. I don’t want to have to shave AND use the No No! The newer version is simply much more effective, and will wipe out just about all the hair.

3. It’s Easy And Comfortable

When I first got the thing, I was worried it would be difficult to use, but it’s incredibly easy. At least as easy as shaving! All you do is hold the NoNo in your hand and slowly roll its Thermicon tip along your skin. I usually do it while watching TV. The process is even easier than the Tria, which requires you to hold it on each tiny patch of skin for a moment as the laser flashes.

And it’s not just that it gets rid of hair easily, it also does it painlessly! I used to wax occasionally for longer hair removal than what shaving offers, but dealing with that excruciating pain was a huge trade off that prevented me from doing it regularly. The comfortable, gentle heat of the NoNo is no big deal at all!

4. The Results Really Last A Long Time

Have you ever gone 2 months without shaving? I’m guessing that even if you haven’t, you have a pretty good idea of just how hairy you’d end up by the end of those two months.

With the NoNo 8800, you have to start using it relatively frequently. In fact, if you want to get results fast, you should probably use it at least a couple times a week. However, after a few months, the effects build up.

After using it regularly for a while, your hair will be coming back so slowly you’ll only need quick touch-ups every couple months to stay hair free!!!

5. It’s Safe To Use On Your Face

While some people were using the original No No Classic on their faces, the company was telling everyone not to. While there is some debate about how safe it actually is or was to use the Classic for facial hair, there is no question about it with the NoNo 8800- it is improved for use on any part of the body, including the face!

A Little Bit About How It Works

The really good news is that even though the lasers they sell for home use aren’t quite as powerful as the professional ones, they work on the same principles and are just as effective. Meaning, in simple terms, that their effects absolutely are permanent!

When a hair removal laser hits the skin, whether it’s in a salon or at home, the darker pigmentation of the hair against the skin causes the hair follicle to absorb all or almost all of the light. It is converted to heat as it travels down the shaft into the root of the hair, the papilla and the bulge.

The root is the real target here- you kill the root, you kill the hair. There’s a big difference between treating it like this and just dealing with the hair on the surface. Over the course of a number of treatments, the hair is systematically beaten down until it ultimately perishes, leaving you hair-free for life!

It Worked For Me

When I did laser treatments, I used The Tria, though there are a number of products on the market that work the same way. I chose the Tria because it is one of only two of these gadgets approved by the FDA, the other being the Silk’n SensEpil, and I liked the cordless, handheld design and compact, powerful laser.

Over the course of just about 6 months, I eventually gained baby smooth legs that I never need to shave!

I want to stress that you should follow the recommended schedule that comes with your laser hair removal. The schedules are designed to target your hair when it is in its growth stage, because that’s the only time the treatments are effective. At any given moment, only about a third of your hair is in the stage, so doing treatments too often is simply a waste of time.

If you follow the instructions, most people see serious, noticeable results within 2-3 months, with 50-80 percent hair reduction in about 5-8 months, depending on the thickness of the hair.

What? Only Eighty Percent?

Sometimes when I mention that it’s not 100 percent, people freak out a little, but it’s important to realize that you actually have two types of hair: androgenic hair, which you know as body hair, and vellus hair, which is the very fine, almost imperceptible hair that covers literally almost your entire body from the time you’re a baby. Laser systems target the former, but not the latter.

If you look at my legs at any time now, it always looks like I have a fresh shave, but that’s just the permanent result of my laser treatments. You have to look very, very closely, you almost need a magnifying glass, to see those vellus hairs.

So, if you’ve been asking, “Is home laser hair removal permanent?”, there’s your answer! It’s definitely permanent, and something to write home about! The lasers work just like the ones the pros use, except they’re much more affordable and convenient. Personally, I’ll never look back!

Let’s face it: body hair is a pain! While shaving is still the standard method of getting rid of unwanted body hair, it’s a big enough deal that women, and even men, have long been looking for better alternatives. And the things we’ll do to get rid of hair can get ridiculous- raise your hand if you’ve ever poured dripping, scalding hot wax on your nether regions before painfully ripping your hair with it.

Fortunately, there are more and more options available to use in this modern age for dealing with this issue. In this article, I’ll teach you a few of the better ways how to remove hair permanently at home- hair removal creams, home electrolysis, and home laser hair removal.

Wait, Hair Removal Creams Are Permanent Now?

I’m sure a lot of you have tried depilatory creams before. If your experience was anything like mine, it involved a heavy chemical stink and an uncomfortable burning sensation. Fun, right? And to add insult to injury, the hair just comes back in like it always did.

Thankfully, there are now creams on the market, like Revitol, that offer a much more gentle experience, without so much stink and burning, as well as giving you the possibility of hair-free skin for life.

Using a cream like this to permanently remove hair at home is a nice option because it’s very convenient, requiring little more on your part than rubbing some cream on your legs, waiting, and then washing it off, along with your hair. It’s a little messy, though, and there still is some amount of stink, though nothing like the older depilatories like Nair.

The big disadvantage to using these and expecting permanent results is that the level of permanence is simply not consistent.  

Some peoples’ hair will go away forever after using these products for a while, but for others it will just keep coming back in indefinitely. For this reason, I recommend looking elsewhere if you’re looking for a truly permanent fix.

Well, How About Home Electrolysis, Then?

Now, the great thing about electrolysis is that when applied correctly, it will result in permanent hair reduction!  That has got to be the best thing about it, but there are some things you need to be aware of going in.

The first thing to realize is that electrolysis requires putting a needle into each and every hair follicle you want treated. This is incredibly tedious, even if you have the steadiness of a surgeon! And because it’s so difficult, many companies that sell home electrolysis kits require you to get a freaking professional license to use it!! 

(Maybe I’m just looking at it wrong, but this seems to almost defeat the purpose of the whole “home” part; to me, this implies I can use it in my home without any kind of special training!)

There are some products out there now that try to solve the problem in various ways. For example, the Vector Electrolysis System uses tweezers instead of a needle. Still, you’re looking at a tedious and potentially painful job ahead of you, plucking at each individual hair with electrified tweezers.

I actually refer to electrolysis as the “Mom” way to get rid of hair permanently. I say this because my mom got it, and while it worked for her, it seems like a frankly outdated and antiquated technique that is probably best left in the past, when our moms used it.

Home Laser Hair Removal – The New Shave?

When I first heard about the new laser systems they were coming out with for home use, I was very skeptical. For most of my life, laser treatments were something only rich people could afford, an attractive perk far outside the reach of most of us plebians. I figured the gadgets they were selling were overpriced gimmicks that didn’t actually work.

The thing is, though, they do work!  The technology is actually incredibly similar to what you’d find if you made an expensive appointment at your local clinic. Basically, a laser shines on your skin and the light travels down the hair follicle into the root, where it progressively damages it to the point where it stops growing.

Now, home laser treatments are not an instant method of permanent hair reduction. In fact, like professional treatments, it may take months of repeated treatments to get the results you’re after. You can’t go into this thinking it won’t take any time or effort on your part.

BUT… this is still the easiest way to get the permanently smooth skin you’re after!

Unlike the tedious individual follicle poking of electrolysis, the laser treatments just require you to shine the laser on your skin, one small patch at a time.

There are a number of these products on the market, like the Silk’n SensEpil, or my favorite, The Tria. When used properly, home laser treatments will consistently render the hair of the user smooth and hairless… FOREVER!!

So, there you have it folks- your three options currently available to remove hair permanently at home.  Hair removal creams are alright for some people, home electrolysis is great for surgeons, your mother, and people with a painful overabundance of free time, and home laser treatments are awesome for anybody.

I’m Not Only The Co-Founder Of The Company…

To prove his product worked, Mark used the Tria on a patch of his own leg for 8 months. The picture shows that more than five years later, absolutely none of that hair had grown back!

I love his commitment to his product. Here’s a man clearly uninterested in shaving his legs in their entirety, but he’s willing to give himself a bald patch for science!!!

That’s Progress

One of the things I feel like we don’t see nearly enough are progress photos. Check out this photo below, taken by Courtney for her site http://www.baxtronlife.com/2012/11/tria-hair-removal-laser-november.html

That’s her right armpit before giving the Tria a shot, and then after just a few sessions. There is less hair there, and it’s finer.

She writes that that while she’s still shaving, the Tria has already had a pretty big impact on how often she needs to. She went from needing to shave every other two to every 3-4 days. Pretty impressive for just a few rounds with the Tria!

Really, Just Three Months?

The 3 month figure really gets people. That’s faster than laser treatments took when I first heard about them! It’s hard to believe you can permanently remove all your unwanted body hair, at home, in just three months.

So okay, her hair isn’t entirely gone by this point. There’s still a little bit of stubble. In the right hand picture, though, she has highlighted the part of her skin that is already hair free, though.

Help Me Out, Here

Alright, ladies (and gentlemen!), I know we hate unflattering pictures, and photos that prominently display our unwanted body hair are really some of the worst. Still, there is a shortage of solid before and after Tria photos, and I know some of you have some because you post about your results in the comment sections all the time!

Even though I only posted a few, I think they’re pretty good evidence of what I’ve been talking about. The Tria absolutely does effectively get rid of unwanted body hair, for good, and without costing too much time, money, or comfort.
